TLAW Committees

TLAW has a number of Standing and Ad Hoc Committees, which assume various roles and responsibilities for the organization as described below. Although Committee Chairs do not vote on Board actions, Committees are essential to the operation and success of TLAW.

If you are interested in volunteering for a Committee, please email the Chair listed below. If no Chair is listed, please email TLAW President Loretta Cravens to learn about how you can get involved.

Annual Meeting Arrangements

The committee is responsible for organizing the annual TLAW meeting held during the convention in June each year.  The committee arranges the TLAW breakfast, coordinates events (including CLE and reception(s)), prepares and invites the judiciary and other dignitaries, and assists with arranging gifts for speakers.  The committee is also responsible for the annual meeting budget and arranging sponsorships for the annual meeting.

Continuing Legal Education

The committee is responsible for organizing continuing legal education courses, preparing the evaluations, and submitting CLE forms for credit to the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education.  Generally, there are at least two CLEs during the year in addition to the TLAW Convention. Please email Kathryn if you have ideas for speakers or topics!

Elected and Appointed Positions

This committee is responsible for providing information to the membership regarding available positions around the State of Tennessee for elected and appointed positions, including for the judiciary, state boards and commissions, and to Boards of Directors for private companies.  This  committee provides historical and current data on the status of women in Tennessee related to elected and appointed positions in the legal profession.

The committee also solicits recommendations for nominations from TLAW members and requests information concerning persons qualified for TLAW leadership. The committee prepares a Nominating Report, the annual slate of candidates of TLAW officers, to present to the membership in a timely manner before the annual meeting in June each year.  Committee members are appointed by the Board and may be nominated for office.

Equal Opportunity and Placement

This committee monitors opportunities and communicates with membership regarding openings in Tennessee for attorneys (non-elected/appointed positions). It also provides information, guidance and mentoring for women seeking work in the legal profession.

Legislation

Nancy Corley, nkc.tdnsh@hotmail.com

The committee focuses on legislation of interest to TLAW members and works to educate members about pending legislation. For example, during the 2015-2016 Board year, the Legislation Committee spearheaded a letter writing campaign by TLAW members in an effort to support legislation that would have continued the work of the Tennessee Economic Council on Women, in addition to contributing a newsletter article on the same topic.

Membership and Local Organization Development

This committee plans and implements events and activities designed to increase the membership and visibility of TLAW.

Publications

This committee is responsible for gathering and preparing news articles for TLAW’s quarterly newsletter. On occasion, the committee may also assist in the design, development, and production of the membership directory and event invitations. The corresponding secretary finalizes and arranges delivery of the newsletter to the membership.

Technology

The committee is responsible for promoting TLAW, TLAW events, newsworthy events and stories, and anything else related to TLAW’s purposes on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and the TLAW website. The committee also researches and reports on technology topics that will assist and benefit members in working more efficiently. The committee writes a column for each TLAW newsletter.
